How this ranking is built
CapBench analysis of public SBA 7(a) lending records — these lenders are ranked by the share of a lender's recent loans to startups (businesses opening with the loan), among the ~30 most active SBA 7(a) lenders, from public records. We report the typical (not the median-of-medians) figure, exclude mega-bank call-center lenders, and never sell ranking position. “Best” is still deal-specific: the right lender is the one already funding deals like yours, priced at or under the rate cap. Common questions
Can a startup get an SBA 7(a) loan?
Yes, though startups face tougher underwriting than acquisitions because there's no operating history to lean on. The lenders here fund the highest share of startups in their recent records.
What does a startup need to qualify?
Expect a solid business plan, realistic projections, relevant experience, and typically more equity in — often 20–30% for a true startup versus 10% for an acquisition. A startup-friendly lender will tell you their bar up front.
Is it easier to buy an existing business than start one?
From a financing angle, usually yes — an existing business has cash flow a lender can underwrite against, so acquisitions often clear more easily than startups. If you're open to either, ask a lender on this list which path they'd back for you.
